Former Dow Jones CIO Stephen Orban moves to Amazon Web Services

Dow Jones runs all of its Asia traffic through AWS in project that was headed by Orban

Former CIO and global head of technology at Dow Jones, Stephen Orban, has moved on to become head of enterprise strategy at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

In his new role Orban will advise technology executives on how they can best make the move to the cloud.

Orban had been CIO of Dow Jones since February 2013, where he developed and enforced a "cloud-first" policy, with the intention of enabling the company to take advantage of infrastructure-, platform- and software-as-a-service solutions in order to reduce costs and increase agility.

He headed a project in which Dow Jones selected AWS to run all of its Asia traffic.

In a blog post, he said: "I have seen that cloud computing is among the best, if not the best, opportunity for enterprises to become more agile, to drive down costs, and to free-up resources to focus on their business - the products and services that bring in revenue."

He continued: "I believe so strongly in this evolution and its inevitability that I have decided to dedicate the next chapter of my career to it."

Orban credits himself with redesigning and managing the technology department of Dow Jones across all business lines, and creating and executing a new hiring strategy that focused on campus recruitment and internship programmes.

He had previously spent more than a decade at Bloomberg in various roles. This included a stint at Bloomberg Sports, a sports analytics division that he co-founded that was later sold to STATS LLC.

Meanwhile, Dow Jones named head of technology platforms Paul Meller as interim CTO while it searches for Orban's successor.
