Apple reveals iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

CEO Tim Cook claims that the new devices are the best the firm has ever 'done'

Apple has revealed the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in an event today in Cupertino, California.

Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, described his pride in the new products, claiming that: "These are the best iPhones we've ever done."

To look at, the new devices look identical to previous iterations of the iPhone, however they are thinner than older models. The iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick, only slightly thinner than the iPhone 6 Plus, which measures 7.1mm.

The measurement which will most excite customers however is the screen size. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display, while the Plus sports the larger screen size many observers had expected, at 5.5 inches. This brings at least one version of the iPhone up to the dimensions of most of its rivals, with devices such as Samsung's Galaxy series of phones being available at the larger size for many years.

Apple was also keen to emphasise the resolution available on these screens, stating that the iPhone 6 has over one million pixels, while the Plus has more than double that figure.

With its legions of arduous fans across the globe, the phones are sure to sell well, and indeed Apple's share price was rising through the day in anticipation of the announcements. However, despite the increased dimension of the iPhone 6 Plus, there is still little evidence of real innovation coming out of Cupertino, so many critics will feel that the firm is still unable to recapture the glory years of the latter stages of the Jobs era.

Finally, many viewers of the live stream of today's event were treated to several simultaneous foreign language translations obscuring Cook's announcements, with the feed soon disappearing entirely for many. Perhaps Apple should divert more of its undoubtedly glossy live production values to its streaming service.
