Tibco buys Jaspersoft in $185m deal

Tibco buys open source embedded analytics and reporting software vendor

Software vendor Tibco is to acquire embedded business intelligence and reporting software supplier Jaspersoft in a $185m deal.

Jaspersoft's open source tools are intended to enable users to embed interactive reports, dashboards and analytics into applications and will enable Tibco to combine these functions alongside its enterprise integration software.

The technology will be integrated into Spotfire, the analytics software that Tibco acquired in 2007, and will enable the company to extend the range of analytic options it offers customers, said chief operating officer Murray Rode.

"Tibco's broader business strategy is to continue to expand our go-to-market model with a wider range of pricing, packaging and deployment options. The acquisition of Jaspersoft accelerates this strategy as it brings a subscription pricing approach for its commercial products along with a set of open source offerings," said Rode.

Tibco chief technology officer Matt Quinn added that the company's aim was to deliver "the most comprehensive set of analytical solutions" for users.

"We live in an era of multiple IT consumption models, from cloud to on-premise to hybrid applications. The Jaspersoft utility cloud service is a perfect complement to our existing software-as-a-service business intelligence service, Tibco Spotfire Cloud," said Quinn.

In addition to open source downloads and services, Jaspersoft also offers its software via a pay-by-the-hour cloud service, launched last year.

Tibco was a pioneer of high-end messaging software, a technology that is being slowly eroded by the need for open standards to enable more widespread integration between different systems, reflected in the development of the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP) open source standard.
