Oracle ehances BYOD capabilities with Bitzer Mobile acquisition

Deal designed to 'address the growing security needs created by the BYOD movement'

Oracle has acquired enterprise mobility solution provider Bitzer Mobile in a move designed to bolster the database giant's mobile security offerings.

The acquisition, the cost of which hasn't been disclosed, was announced with little fanfare late on Friday through a short statement on the Oracle website.

"Oracle announced it has acquired Bitzer Mobile, a provider of mobile applications management solutions that allow organizations to provide employees access to corporate data and applications from their mobile devices, to address the growing security needs created by the bring your own device (BYOD) movement," the statement said.

"Bitzer Mobile augments Oracle's industry-leading portfolio of Fusion Middleware products, and is expected to be a core component to its mobile security strategy. Together, Oracle and Bitzer Mobile are expected to provide organizations with a comprehensive solution to further manage security of enterprise information held on personal and company-owned mobile devices. The transaction has closed," it added.

The Bitzer Mobile website now redirects users to the Oracle and Bizter Mobile statement.

Bitzer's key product - and what Oracle is apparently interested in - is an enterprise mobility solution that "utilizes a secure, mobile app container to isolate corporate access and data from employee's personal apps on popular mobile devices without compromising the rich user experience," according to a YouTube video description about the firm.

The solution runs on iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Window Phone smartphones.

Bitzer Mobile had been active for 999 days before it was acquired by Oracle, although what happens next for either party remains to be seen, with Oracle vague on its plans following the acquisition.

"Oracle is currently reviewing the existing Bitzer Mobile product roadmap and will be providing guidance to customers in accordance with Oracle's standard product communication policies.

"Any resulting features and timing of release of such features as determined by Oracle's review of Bitzer Mobile's product roadmap are at the sole discretion of Oracle," a statement said.
