Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 operating system was launched alongside the Nokia Lumia 920 towards the end of 2012.

The OS is a significant upgrade to past versions of Windows Phone, adding a host of new services and features.

Key among these are multi-core processor support and the ability to resize the user interface's interactive tiles.

However, the Microsoft OS and Lumia phone are still underdog players in the smartphone market, accounting for a tiny 4.1 percent of global smartphone sales, according to research house Kantar Worldpanel.

For this reason some of the OS's and smartphone's more interesting features are still a mystery to most smartphone users.
