CES: Lenovo unveils ThinkPad Helix laptop with Windows 8

Firm touts benefits of four-mode device for enterprise users

LAS VEGAS: Lenovo has added yet another addition to its ThinkPad lineup, the flexible ThinkPad Helix.

Unveiled alongside the ThinkPad Edge E431 and E531 laptops, the ThinkPad Helix features what Lenovo calls a 11.6in "rip and flip" touchscreen, which lets users operate the device in four different modes including Stand Mode and Tablet Mode.

This screen features in-plane switching technology for vibrancy and good viewing angles, and boasts a 1080p HD resolution.

Thanks to the "rip" function, which means the tablet can be undocked from the keybord, the Helix is also the slimmest Intel third-generation Core tablet to date, Lenovo claimed, which along with its 835g weight, makes it a highly portable device.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Helix also features a redesigned full touch trackpad, 10-hour battery life, baked-in LTE and NFC connectivity, and runs Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.

The firm touted its potential for appealing to enterprises looking to invest in Windows 8 devices too.

"The ThinkPad Helix gives business professionals two devices in one form factor," said Peter Hortensius, senior vice president at Lenovo.

"It is a high performance, thin and light ultrabook with a detachable Windows 8 tablet."

The Lenovo ThinkPad Helix will be available in the US from February costing $1,799. UK availability is still to be announced, and Lenovo was unable to confirm details at CES on Sunday.
