CES: Nvidia announces Tegra 4 for smartphones and tablets

Dubbed 'the world's fastest mobile chip'

LAS VEGAS: Nvidia on Sunday announced its long-rumoured Tegra 4 processor for smartphones and tablets, which it claims is the world's fastest mobile chip.

Unveiled at CES in Las Vegas, the Nvidia Tegra 4 retains the firm's so-called "four to one" standard featuring four processors alongside a fifth battery saving core. There's also 72 GPU cores onboard for powerful mobile gaming, alongside built-in LTE support.

Nvidia showed off the processor on a Google Nexus 7 tablet, which took 27 seconds to load 25 unique web pages, compared to a 50 second load time on the Samsung Nexus 10 - currently the fastest Android tablet on the market. Nvidia boasted that the chipset is also faster than the Apple iPad 4, and three times as fast as the Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablet.

"If you load a webpage using Tegra 4, it comes up in a second," Nvidia explained. "With this processor, there's no more waiting around."

It's not just quick at loading web pages, as Nvidia claims the processor has been boosted for taking perfect images and videos too. Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang claimed the Tegra 4 processor takes images 10 times faster than previous-generation processors, making HDR images look much more impressive - adding that it'll be even more impressive than images shot using an iPhone 5.

"We want your phone to be able to take images as good as a DLSR," Huang said at Sunday's press conference, at which V3 was in attendance.
