Jolla Mobile start-up to unveil MeeGo-based Sailfish smartphone OS in November

Ex-Nokia team's amended version of MeeGo interface to debut in Helsinki

Finnish start-up Jolla Mobile has announced it will unveil its own version of the MeeGo mobile operating system (OS), codenamed Sailfish, at a technology conference in Helsinki this November.

The Jolla team is formed of former Nokia employees that helped develop the N9 handset, one of a select few MeeGo-based smartphones to ever be released by the Finnish smartphone firm.

MeeGo was originally a collaborative project between Nokia and Intel but Nokia ditched the platform in favour of Microsoft's Windows Phone system in 2011.

Jolla announced its plans to create a new MeeGo powered smartphone in July.

Analysts have been sceptical of Jolla's chances at making MeeGo a valid competitor to the already established Android and iOS ecosystems.

Despite the analysts comments, Jolla chief executive Jussi Hurmola has remained adamant the OS will succeed, reiterating his insistence that the platform's open nature will attract developers.

"I'm thrilled to finally be able to show the user interface we have been working on, and it will be exciting to open the developer story with SDK and applications to the public," commented Hurmola.

Prior to the announcement Jolla confirmed it had inked an alliance deal in Hong Kong, seeing a number of unnamed companies pledge to support its forthcoming OS.

The deal will reportedly see alliance members contribute €200m to help the platform grow.
