Nokia unveils Lumia 920 Pureview Windows Phone 8 handset

Company shows off answer to Apple iPhone 5

Nokia has unveiled its first ever Windows Phone 8 smartphone, the Lumia 920 complete with Pureview camera tech and wireless charging.

The Finnish phone maker unveiled the Lumia 920 at a Nokia event in New York on Wednesday. Powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone 8, the smartphone features the same camera technology seen in its previous Pureview smartphone.

Nokia claims the Lumia 920's 8MP rear camera is the best currently available on any smartphone capturing "five to 10 times more light than competitors devices".

The Lumia 920 also takes advantage of Windows Phone 8's multi-core processor support, using a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor that is set to be backed up by 1GB of RAM.

Windows Phone 8 is significantly less power hungry than Android, according to Nokia. The firm said that the OS' low power requirements means the Lumia 920 should match most top-end Android device's speeds, as the low system requirements mean it should be faster with less powerful technology.

The Lumia 920 houses a 4.5in HD display that Nokia said houses custom PureMotion HD+ black screens, meaning the display is crystal clear in all lighting conditions, Nokia claimed. The technology appears to be an improved version of the Clearblack technology used in Nokia's previous Lumia 800 and 900 Windows Phones.

Nokia also confirmed Near Field Communication technology, a microSD slot for expandable storage and 4G LTE connectivity for the Lumia 920. The handset features a 2000mAh battery, the largest battery every seen in a Nokia smartphone and includes native support for wireless charging, via its Fatboy recharge pillow.

Past its hardware, the 920 features several software additions, including a slew of Nokia's own apps, including its new Nokia City Lens. The feature offers users an augmented reality display that gives dynamic information about users' surroundings.

There is currently no word on the Lumia 920's price or release date but check back with V3 later today for further details and an opening hands-on with the device.
