Samsung unveils Omnia M Windows Phone handset

Company seeks to entice businesses with cloud and office features

Samsung has unveiled the Omnia M Windows Phone, continuing its support for the bring your own device movement (BYOD).

The Korean tech giant unveiled the phone as Nokia's flagship Windows Phone, the Lumia 900 went on sale in the UK.

The Omnia M runs the same Windows 7.5 Mango operating system seen on Nokia's Lumia smartphones, although it is smaller and packs lower end tech.

The device features a 4in super Amoled display and is powered by a 1GHz single-core processor. It boasts a 5MP rear-facing and VGA front-facing camera, 4GB of non-expandable storage, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, and a 1500mAH battery.

The new Omnia includes many features which will appeal to consumers that want a device they can also use for work - tying in with the BYOD trend, which Samsung listed as one of its key growth areas during the Galaxy S3's unveiling earlier in May.

For office use, the device features its own cloud network, where users can share messages, videos and photos on a virtual bulletin board which can be remotely viewed on other Samsung devices.

The new Omnia promises to house Samsung's ChatON communication service, that lets users connect to other video chat-enabled devices to organise group chat sessions.

Samsung is also offering Omnia owners access to 25GB of free storage on Microsoft's SkyDrive, a marked increase over the 7GB free storage normally offered. That feature could be of interest to most businesses, letting them store, access, edit and share photos, videos, Office documents and OneNote notes online.

Samsung has not given the Omnia M a firm UK release date or price, though its higher specification predecessor, the Omnia W, retailed for £245 SIM-free at launch.
