Khronos Group launches KITE education platform

Program will teach development with open standards

The Khronos Group has launched a programme aimed at teaching students to work with its open development platforms.

The company said that the Khronos Institute for Training and Education (KITE) would look to provide educators and students with resources for learning to use the group's open standards and API platforms.

Based in Taiwan, KITE will offer online courses as well as other training materials for budding developers and educators.

Formed as a collaboration between enterprise and consumer technology vendors, the Khronos group maintains a number of open web standards and developer platforms, including OpenGL, OpenCL and WebGL.

The group hopes that the effort will help to train young engineers to work with the industry standard platforms.

"With KITE, academic and research institutions now have the opportunity to train their students and better prepare them for industry by leveraging the work done within the Khronos working groups," said Neil Trevett, vice president of mobile content for Nvidia and president of the Khronos group.

"For Khronos, this collaboration with educators will encourage the availability of the skilled workforce needed to drive continued innovation in product development and deployment. KITE is a win-win collaboration for everyone involved."

With skilled developers and IT staff in short supply in many locations, businesses have been asked to help fill the void in education. In the UK, government officials have begun programmes designed to revamp IT education.
