Intel aims six-core i7 desktop processors at high-performance market
Core i7-3960X and i7-3930K designed for 3D rendering and digital media creation
Intel has updated its Core i7 processor line to target the high-performance desktop and enthusiast computing markets.
The Core i7-3960X and i7-3930K models offer a six-core architecture designed for high-end applications such as 3D rendering and digital media creation. The processors run at 3.2GHz and 3.3GHz and are based on a 32nm process.
Intel said that the 32nm process is a key component of its attempts to improve performance while maintaining energy efficiency and cutting power consumption.
The new processors come with two motherboard designs that support PCIe 2.0 and 6Gbit/s Serial ATA drive connections.
"We are excited to deliver the ultimate desktop platform to enthusiast PC users," said Intel desktop client platforms general manager Zane Ball.
"With uncompromised performance, quad-channel memory, amazing Turbo headroom and more robust PCI Express capabilities, this platform is sure to create a lot of excitement for our customers and the industry."
The release comes as Intel is locked in a heated battle with rival AMD, which introduced the eight-core FX desktop line last month aimed at high-end gaming and enthusiast systems.
The FX chips are the first to use AMD's Bulldozer architecture, which will form the basis of the company's plans for the next five to six years.
The chips target the high-end market, but enthusiast processor lines often debut features which are later added to server and workstation platforms.
