IPO moves patent applications online

New online application system to make it easier for businesses to file patents

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has launched an online patent system, which it claims will make it easier for UK businesses to apply for patents.

The new service, called Ipsum, is constantly updated, ensuring that applicants will have up-to-date information on patent applications. And unlike the previous paper-based system, it will be free to use.

“The service will give businesses, universities and consumers instant access to the information they need so they can understand the progress of patent applications and save money,” said Baroness Wilcox, minister for intellectual property.

In May 2011, the Hargreaves Review into intellectual property and economic prosperity highlighted the damage done to the economy by patent backlogs.

Tim Roberts, president of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, welcomed the new Ipsum system.

“This online access to patent files will certainly make it easier and quicker for our profession to get hold of up-to-date information. It will also make the patent system more transparent and understandable for business people and the general public.”
