Samsung "not interested" in HP's PC business
CEO quashes rumours of potential takeover
Samsung has said that it is not interested in buying HP's PC business, amid speculation of a potential deal.
HP recently announced that it is looking into the possibility of selling off its PC business, as it looks to shift its focus away from the consumer market, and discontinue production of its new TouchPad tablet.
Samsung has been tipped as a potential buyer in some media reports, but Samsung chief executive Choi Gee-sung quashed those rumours in a statement provided to Computing.
"To put to rest any speculation on this issue, I would like to definitively state that Samsung Electronics will not acquire HP's PC business," he said.
"HP is the global leader in the PC business with sales of 40 million units last year, while Samsung is an emerging player in the category and sold about 10 million units in 2010."
He explained that differences in size and strategy of the business units removed any possibility of a potential deal.
"Based on the significant disparity in scale with Samsung's own PC business and the complete lack of synergies, it would be both infeasible and imprudent to even consider such an acquisition."
