Ofcom lets mobile firms trade spectrum

Ofcom has given the go-ahead for mobile operators to trade the rights to the radio spectrum they hold

UK regulator Ofcom has said mobile phone operators can trade the rights to any radio spectrum they hold.

The regulator added that it aims to help increase mobile network capacity, and deliver faster and more reliable mobile services for consumers.

The regulations, which cover spectrums at 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz, should give operators increased flexibility, said Ofcom.

By allowing operators to trade their spectrums, the regulator believes that it will be used more efficiently.

The ability to trade will see operators with greater need making offers to those who need it less.

The regulator said it hopes this added flexibility will help operators respond more efficiently to demand.

Ofcom will be responsible for the administration of spectrum trades. It will publish the details of proposed trades online, confirm that they are acceptable, and then issue revised licences to implement the trades.
