WWDC 2011: Apple set to unveil cloud offering

The annual conference showcases everything new in iOS and Mac OS X

The annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicks off today in San Francisco, and Apple is set to unveil its very own cloud offering to rival those of Google and Amazon.

It is expected that the service will be called iCloud after Apple purchased the iCloud.com domain name earlier this year.

Unsurprisingly, Apple has remained fairly tight lipped about the cloud service, and it is not clear whether iCloud will be a music streaming tool, or offer wider cloud services, such as storage.

Apple will also be showcasing the latest version of its Macintosh operating system, Lion, as well as an upgraded version of its mobile operating system, iOS.

It is expected that more than 1,000 engineers will attend WWDC this year.
