IT jobs on the line as Northern Rock looks to restructure

Loss-making bank could cut up to 680 staff

Northern Rock has launched a restructure consultation that could see up to 680 jobs cut by the end of the year, some of which could affect its IT department.

In loss-making bank expects the job cuts will affect "employees at all grades across the company", and when asked about the IT department, a spokesperson said that "all staff would be looked at".

By restructuring the company and cutting jobs Northern Rock hopes to attract a private-sector buyer.

"This appalling news of 680 job cuts is scandalous," said David Fleming, national officer for union Unite.

"We are witnessing another move to scale back this already lean organisation, in a desperate bid to find a private buyer."

The results of the consultation are expected by the end of the year.
