BCS appoints new president

Jim Norton aims to raise the profile of computer science and computational thinking

BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, has appointed Jim Norton as its new president, following the body's annual AGM yesterday.

To date Norton has worked as an independent director, policy adviser and public speaker. He also sits on several boards, including the UK Parliament's Office of Science & Technology and is a council member of the UK Parliamentary IT Committee.

Norton said of his appointment: "My themes for the year will be raising the profile of computer science and 'computational thinking' within schools and on increasing the direct relevance of the Chartered Institute to students at all levels."

Bob Harvey was elected deputy president. His work to date includes experience as a supplier and consumer of IT, and he is currently director of information services at Barnardo's.
