Motorola latest to reap the benefits of Android

Strong sales help to bolster quarterly profits

Strong Android sales helped drive Motorola's profits

Motorola has posted strong quarterly numbers on the back of solid sales for its mobile handsets.

The company reported a profit of $87m (£55m) from its mobile devices brand. The company sold 2.7 million smartphones as part of a total shipment of 8.3 million handsets. Revenues were listed at $1.7bn (£1.08bn).

Motorola logged some $5.4bn in sales over the quarter, and reported strong sales from its enterprise mobility and network businesses.

The company released its Droid X handset in the US earlier this month, and many locations reported selling out of the device within days.

"As we continue to execute on our business strategy, we are in a strong position to continue improving our share in the rapidly growing smartphone market and improving our operating performance," said Motorola mobility chief executive Sanjay Jha.

"The Mobile Devices and Home businesses remain focused on developing next-generation products to capitalise on the convergence of mobile experiences and home entertainment."

Motorola is not the only vendor to credit Android with driving up profits. Earlier this month HTC recorded a 54 per cent jump in quarterly revenues on the back of strong Android sales.
