Novell announces support for MeeGo

Vendor will back the SUSE operating system on netbooks

MeeGo is a merging of Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo

Novell has announced plans to release SUSE MeeGo as a fully supported operating system for netbooks.

The company said that it expects to see SUSE MeeGo appearing in netbooks over the coming year, and that the Linux and Nokia developed technology will provide a powerful alternative to existing operating systems.

"Our commitment to ship SUSE MeeGo further extends our position as the leading operating system vendor in the desktop Linux market," said Guy Lunardi, director of client preloads at Novell.

"Novell is passionate about providing users with a better computing experience, and MeeGo will deliver on that promise."

MeeGo is an attempt to merge Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo into one operating system, and the announcement already has backing from Intel.

"Novell's support of MeeGo only further establishes its commitment to enhancing the mobile Linux experience," said Doug Fisher, vice president of Intel's Software and Services Group and general manager of the Systems Software Division.

"SUSE MeeGo together with Intel Atom processor-based platforms will provide consumers with a choice of Linux operating systems on netbooks and emerging mobile devices."

Novell is planning to showcase Meego 1.0 at Computex this week.
