Lenovo boosts single server performance with DDR3

New systems aimed at SMB market

Lenovo claims that the new servers are its most power efficient yet

Lenovo has released details of two Xeon single-processor servers aimed at the small and medium sized business market.

The TS200 tower and RS210 rack servers use Xeon 3400 processors, and incorporate DDR33 and 32G of RDIMM memory to boost performance and reduce power requirements. Lenovo claims that the servers are the most power efficient the company has yet produced.

Lenovo's strategy with DDR 3 contrasts with that of AMD, which is holding off on switching to DDR3 until the cost comes down and its use becomes more widespread.

"Our new ThinkServers deliver a smart leap forward for corporate branch offices and small businesses to become more productive and efficient," said Tom Tobul, executive director of enterprise systems at Lenovo.

The servers are the first single-processor units to use Lenovo's Integrated Management Module, which allows server managers to reconfigure systems remotely over the internet, even if the server is powered down.

Support for virtualisation software from VMware, Microsoft, Red Hat and Novell is built in, including for VMware Hypervisor, VMware vSphereTM 4 and Microsoft Server 2008 with Hyper-V.

Lenovo is also including a 90-day trial of its ThinkPlus Priority Support, which advises companies with smaller IT departments on the best way to integrate and configure the servers.

The new systems will be out before the end of the year.
