Nokia announces two new power phones

Handsets boast GPS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA

Nokia has claimed the N85 and N79 are powerful enough to be called mobile computing platforms

Nokia has launched two new mobile handsets that it sees as powerful enough to be called mobile computing platforms rather than simple phones.

The N85 and N79 both come with Wi-Fi and HSDPA data connectivity, microSD removable storage, FM radio and GPS. Both run the Symbian Series 60 Version 3 Feature Pack 2 operating system.

The N85 is a slider phone with a 2.6in OLED screen and a five megapixel video/still shot camera. An 8GB MicroSD card is included and for leisure use comes with 10 made for mobile games.

"The Nokia N85 was created to be more than the sum of its parts, offering a complete mobile entertainment package designed for connecting, sharing and discovering," said Juha-Pekka Sipponen, director of Nokia Nseries.

The N79 is designed more for the consumer market and comes with a series of removable fashion covers. It only has a 4GB microSD card and is optimized for mobile web browsing.

"The Nokia N79 packs cutting-edge technology into a compact," said Juha Kokkonen, Director, Nokia Nseries.

"This balance of performance and style means that it is a powerful and defining step forward from the Nokia N72 and Nokia N73."

Both handsets will be available in October.
