Apple iOS4 gets mixed reaction from V3.co.uk readers
Consensus is that Apple should not have made the software update available for 3G handsets
The iPhone 3G struggles to run the upgraded OS
Apple’s iOS4 update has received a mixed reaction from V3.co.uk readers, with 3G iPhone owners reporting that it has made their phones sluggish.
The general consensus among iPhone 3GS owners is that the handset is capable of running the latest OS with no performance problems. However, the iPhone 3G’s lower hardware specification means that it simply cannot handle the upgrade.
V3.co.uk reader Peter said that he downloaded the iOS4 to his 3GS and found the new operating system a huge improvement on the previous version, with no drop in performance or battery life.
“You are now able to manage the apps in a far more efficient way and switching between apps is faster and easier,” he said.
In contrast, Kenny explained that upgrading his 3G to iOS4 was a bad idea because it “ruined the phone”.
“It's painfully slow and has made very little difference to its usability. All my photographs are now in much lower resolution and very fuzzy,” he commented.
Meanwhile, another reader identifying themselves as G25 was disappointed in the features available on iOS4, asking why there isn’t any push scheduling, improved notifications or free customisable ringtones/alerts on offer.
“iOS4 needs some improvement to [make the iPhone] a world-class business device. Nokia has all of the above features, as does Android, and Apple has a lot of work to do,”
he concluded.
Apple had also faced criticism about the time it took to upgrade to iOS4. V3.co.uk readers reported it took between 25 minutes and four hours to get the software working.
Judging by some of these comments, iPhone 3G users should be wary of updating to iOS4 and it is advisable that all contacts and multimedia data are backed up before embarking on the process.
