Lotus Notes extended to smartphones

Email system now accessible from iPhone, Android and Symbian handsets

IBM has extended its mobile footprint at Lotusphere 2010

Lotusphere 2010: Apple iPhone, Google Android and Nokia Symbian mobile users will soon be able to access Lotus email accounts while on the go.

The next release of Lotus Notes Traveler will allow Lotus Notes/Domino users to access email, calendar and contact information from their smartphones, said IBM at its annual Lotusphere event in Orlando, Florida.

"We believe IBM has take a leadership position in providing the broadest mail and collaboration support for mobile devices," said Kevin Cavanaugh, messaging and collaboration vice president at IBM.

The company also announced a plug-in called IBM Lotus Notes Traveler Companion, which will be available for iPhone users to download from Apple's App Store. The application will require Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.1 software, according to IBM.

Additionally, IBM promised a future version of Lotus Sametime for Symbian mobiles that will offer presence awareness and click-to-call capabilities from the smartphone's native address book.
