EU presses forward with Intel-AMD case

Court denies Intel's request to stall anti-trust proceedings

The EU will now go ahead with the anti-trust case between AMD and Intel

Intel's attempt to push back its European Union anti-trust case with rival AMD has been struck down.

The European Commission's Court of First Instance declined Intel's request to delay proceedings in order to give the chip giant more time to respond.

Intel had been given a deadline of October 2008 to file a response to the anti-trust charges filed by AMD. Shortly after the deadline passed, Intel filed an appeal asking for more time.

The latest decision opens the door for the EU to go ahead with the anti-trust case between the two chipmakers.

AMD had claimed that, over the first half of the decade, Intel had illegally offered discounts to vendors that agreed to favour Intel chips, or stop offering systems that contained AMD chips.

Both sides have been locked in anti-trust battles in courts worldwide over Intel's alleged anti-competitive practices since 2005.
