Macworld 2011 kicks off without Apple

Organisers still claim event will be bigger and better than last year

Apple won't be attending this year's Macworld event in San Francisco for the second year running. But the event is still expected to be a success, with the organisers claiming that there will be a 30 to 35 per cent increase in exhibitors compared with 2010.

One of the most popular draws of the event last year was the introduction of the Mobile Apps Showcase. With Apple seeing its 10 billionth download this week it is likely this will continue to be a main attraction.

Thousands of developers will be highlighting their innovations for the iPad or iPhone, and Computing will report on the most interesting announcements.

The event will also see developers, industry watchers, media analysts and volume product buyers come together for the Macworld Industry Forum to discuss the dynamics that shape the Apple marketplace.

Computing will post a Macworld round-up containing news and highlights from this year's show on Friday.
