Samsung and IBM to partner on mobile chips

The companies are working together to develop new semiconductor technology for smartphones

IBM and Samsung have announced that they are to partner on research into new semiconductor technology for use in smartphones and other new gadgets.

Samsung researchers will join IBM scientists at the IBM Semiconductor Research Alliance in New York, where they will investigate new materials and transistor structures, as well as innovative interconnect and packaging solutions for next-generation technology nodes.

The companies hope that the research will enable them to produce industry-leading silicon solutions that are optimised for performance, power consumption and size.

"Collaborative innovation will be critical if the semiconductor industry is to continue driving new forms of consumer electronics and new methods of computing," said Michael Cadigan, general manager, IBM Microelectronics.

"This is why we're excited to have Samsung scientists working with us at the most fundamental stages of the R&D process."
