Extra IT supports Halifax growth

Banks introduce self-service kiosks

Financial services firm HBOS will make further investments in new technology as part of plans to open 100 new Halifax branches over the next five years.

The banking group says it expects to work with its current IT suppliers, including NCR, when rolling out desktop computers, networking equipment and cash machines to new high-street branches, predominantly in the south of England.

But the bank will constantly review technological developments over the period of the five-year project, says a spokesman for HBOS.

‘It will be the same set-up as existing branches. But as the project is running over the next four to five years, technology is likely to improve, so our decisions will reflect this,’ he said.

HBOS also plans to introduce computerised self-service kiosks in branches, to help speed up customer deposits and queries.

‘There are plans for intelligent deposit machines and other technologies that speed things up for customers. It will be another facility so that customers do not have to queue.’

Alliance & Leicester announced last week that it also plans to install self-service technology at 50 of its branches, so that customers can undertake basic banking transactions.
