Spar examines self-service checkouts

Convenience chain to test concept in Northern Ireland

Convenience store chain Spar is considering installing self-service checkouts after inviting technology vendors to provide a proof-of-concept.

Spar IT controller Roy Ford says the trial, which will take place in Northern Ireland, is designed to prove the viability of self-service technology.

‘When developing IT solutions for independent retailers, it is key that any supplier understands the need to prove new technologies in a live environment,’ he said.

‘This enables a demonstration that not only does the product work, but that it brings real business benefits to their stores. Wincor Nixdorf has a proven track record in self-checkout and was prepared to partner Spar to prove the business case.’

Neil Granleese, IT manager at Henderson Group, which owns the Spar franchise in Northern Ireland, says self-checkout improves the customer experience by offering a quick and easy way to shop.
