Council agency secures systems

Commercial services unit looks for disaster recovery update

Kent County Council’s Commercial Services division is to update disaster recovery systems to protect against loss of data.

The self-financing unit provides goods and services to the council’s directorates and to a range of approved public bodies.

‘We want to be sure we can carry on trading in the event of any disaster,’ said Chris Geary, Commercial Services head of IT.

‘We already had systems in place, but as technology changes we need to update the system to make sure it is compatible with what we have.’

Gartner analyst Simon Mingay says public sector disaster recovery planning varies from very good to very bad.

‘In and around London there is a lot of best practice, but outside it tends to be patchy at best,’ he said.
