UK backs online shopping despite OFT doubts
Customers still willing to spend large amounts online
UK shoppers are still willing to make large purchases online despite recent doubts by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) about consumer confidence in online shopping.
A survey of almost 10,000 people found that over a third (36.4 per cent) was happy to spend £500 or more in any one online shopping transaction.
A further two thirds (63.2 per cent) said they were willing to spend more than £100 on a single item from a web site.
The most popular items are still low value products such as CDs, DVDs and books, with insurance close behind.
Ecommerce is continuing to increase among Britons with almost a third (23 per cent) shopping online each week, 44 per cent shopped online monthly and just 2.5 per cent never shopped online.
The OFT recently launched an investigation to determine if consumers are confident when shopping on the Internet. It also aims to discover if consumers are aware of their rights and receiving the correct level of regulatory protection.
The research was conducted by online shopping reward portal Mutual Points.
It also found that 14 per cent of consumers researched purchases online before buying from the high street while 21 per cent looked at products in shops before buying online.
