Multiple financial reporting systems need to be streamlined

In a report released on the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), the National Audit Office (NAO) complained that the ministry’s multiple data systems were affecting the board’s ability to monitor its overall budgetary position.

The multiple systems are the result of significant revisions to its structure since it was established in 2007. The NOA also complained that they affected the timely flow of financial and operational information, affected the ministry’s ability to produce accurate month-end reports and monitor financial risks as they develop.

In its recommendations, the NAO said that within the next four months the ministry should articulate a strategy for the development of financial management across the board, and set clear milestones and resource requirements for the delivery of its programme of financial management improvements.

Second, it recommended that the ministry’s accountability structures and delivery mechanisms should be streamlined during its review of its arm’s length bodies.
