Verizon Business stops DOS attacks

Defense Mitigation Service extended to Europe

IP network provider Verizon Business has extended its denial of service mitigation capabilities to 11 countries in Europe, including the UK.

Verizon's DoS Defense Mitigation service is available to customers of the firm's dedicated internet services, internet co-location and server hosting services, according to the firm's Graham Starkins.

The firm has implemented a number of "scrubbing centres" at three locations on its IP backbone across Europe. If they suspect a DoS attack, customers can choose whether to manually reroute the traffic through the scrubbers, have traffic directed into the backbone via a management portal, or do it by ringing a helpdesk, he explained.

The scrubbers then detect and stop the attack packets, and send the clean traffic back to the customer.

"This is a network-based service, it doesn't sit at the customer's premises because, if it is a big attack, it's probably too late if you're dealing with the traffic there," explained Starkins.
