BBC to show live World Cup games on the web
Football coverage poses potential headache for corporate networks
The BBC is to broadcast all its live World Cup football matches on the internet for the first time.
The corporation will also provide on-demand highlights packages on the web for every game in the tournament, which starts on 8 June.
‘The World Cup on broadband is our biggest commitment yet to bringing people major events where and when they want them,’ BBC head of sport Roger Mosey told the bbc.co.uk web site.
IT managers across the country now face the prospect of employees streaming live video broadcasts to their desktops during the day – posing a potential bandwidth problem for many firms.
‘We know a lot of online viewing is done in the office, so we suspect this will allow people both to do their job and to keep up with the very latest action from Germany,’ Mosey told the BBC web site.
The broadcaster also plans to provide live internet coverage of this year’s Wimbledon tennis championships.
