Expand gives Notes oomph

New product uses compression techniques and acceleration algorithms to speed performance

Wide area network optimisation and acceleration specialist Expand Networks unveiled technology last week it says will boost the performance of Lotus Notes and other messaging platforms by up to 1,000 percent.

To quicken the transmission of Notes email, the firm’s Compass Platform appliance uses acceleration algorithms written for the app, as well as compression techniques, local data cacheing and Layer 7 quality of service (QoS), said Adam Davison, Expand’s European vice-president of sales, who added, “Each of our test results is from a real customer network.”

“You can do QoS in the router, but not all routers support it. Where they do, it eats memory and CPU power, which is why customers prefer to have a separate appliance,” he said.
