Synchronica to push email to low-cost phones

Wireless specialist Synchronica to merge tools and revamp servers

Wireless developer Synchronica plans to merge its two device management tools and revamp its middleware server to support push delivery of email to low-cost phones.

Synchronica said it will merge Mobile Manager, a tool for enterprises to remotely manage smartphones, with SyncML Device Management Server for carriers. The new release, due later in 2007, will be called Mobile Manager 2.0 but will be based on the Java technology that underpins SyncML DM Server.

"Implementing in Java means it will run in both Windows and Unix environments," said Synchronica chief executive Carsten Brinkshulte. While enterprises are happy with Windows, operators wanted a version that runs on Unix, he added. It will also manage a broader range of mobile devices.

A new version of Synchronica's SyncML Gateway server will support push email delivery via the Imap protocol as well as SyncML. To be called Mobile Gateway, this will enable push email on many low-cost feature phones as well as smarphones, Brinkshulte said.
