Opteron servers cut power bills

Sun last week launched new servers based on AMD Opteron processors. The new Sun Fire X4200 and X4100 64bit x86 servers, codenamed Galaxy, come with one or two dual-core processors, and can run Solaris, Windows, and Linux releases from Red Hat and Suse.

“These servers will lead to a 75 percent space saving in datacentres, will reduce power consumption by two-thirds and will give at least a 50 percent increase in performance,” said Trudy Norris-Grey, Sun’s UK managing director.

Sun is attempting to build its presence in the x86 server market. According to analyst companies Gartner and IDC, Sun is only sixth in x86 server sales.

Sun president Jonathan Schwartz said the new AMD servers will offer excellent floating-point performance, and coming Sparc-based Niagara servers will support high network throughput.
