Fujitsu reports improvement in all business segments
First profits for semiconductor division in seven quarters
Fujitsu was hit hard by the recession
IT services firm Fujitsu today reported improving profits in all its business areas, with the semiconductor business seeing profit for the first time in seven quarters.
This was attributed to an improved PC hardware market following the recession.
The firm posted overall profits of 4.1bn yen (£28m) for the third quarter 2009, compared with a net loss of 40.7bn yen year on year.
Income from the semiconductor business totaled 2.9bn yen, compared with a loss of 21.1bn yen in the third quarter of 2008.
In the Ubiquitous Product Solutions business, which includes PCs and mobile phones, operating income totalled 11.6bn yen compared with a loss of 11.5bn yen last year.
Fujutsu's IT services business posted an operating income of 28.2bn yen, up from 20.2bn yen last year.
"I'm pleased to report that profitability continues to improve in all our business areas, and we're on track to meet our earnings targets for fiscal 2009, " said Michiyoshi Mazuka, chairman and president of Fujitsu Limited.
Consolidated net sales for the period were 1,146.7bn yen, an increase of 8.8 per cent year on year.
Sales in Japan declined 2.5 per cent but rose six per cent outside Japan on an adjusted basis, largely thanks to recovering demand for electronic components.
