Newcastle Council equips its vehicles with mobile technology
Council's neighbourhood services fleet gets new monitoring system
Newcastle City Council has taken on a mobile data system for part of its fleet of vehicles to improve their use and security.
The system will be fitted to 220 vehicles including gritters, grass cutters, mechanical sweepers and cans in the council's neighbourhood services department.
Capable of giving information on vehicle location, status and speed, the system will allow Newcastle's neighborhood services department to cut response times and complete jobs more quickly.
Nigel Hails, the director of neighbourhood services says the APD supplied system offers Newcastle easy integration with its current geographic information displays.
'That link is key to communicating out in the field, where some of our employees use trunk radios and others use mobile phones,' he said.
'Both sets of users will be on the same vehicle location system. In addition the interface is so intuitive that training our employees just takes an hour.'
The mobile data system will include a panic button system, so that staff in the field can call for back-up immediately, and help monitor the effectiveness of how the council's fleet is deployed.
