Hospital eyes up interactive training

Moorfields Eye Hospital is using interactive software for IT training and plans extension

The trust is looking to extend to other applications

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is using interactive software to train 500 staff how to use a new patient administration system (PAS).

The system will go live on 16 April at Moorfields’ 11 sites. The Trust needed all doctors, nurses and clinical personnel to be up to speed with the new system to ensure a smooth introduction.

The trust has bought knowledge transfer software from vendor Knowledge Solutions to enable the online training.

Ian Mercer, training manager at the trust, says successful online education is crucial to the success of PAS.

‘The software will be used prior to the launch date so that users are familiar with the new training tool, and following the launch it will be imperative to provide tailored support for all users,’ he said.

Training is tailored to roles and functions, and built-in management systems track the progress of individual students to ensure all staff complete and pass mandatory training.

‘It is essential that the system is fast and the support can keep up with changes in the software as users move from screen to screen,’ said Mercer.

The Knowledge Solutions software is not specific to individual applications or packages and Moorfields hopes to use it to support the introduction of a new finance system and a variety of other applications.

‘One of the reasons for purchasing the technology was its use in other software such as Windows-based programs and the intranet,’ said Mercer.
