Appeal for old PCs reaches 12,000

But Computer Aid still needs your helps

IT directors have pledged more than 12,000 used PCs since April to our Computer Aid appeal – but we still need your help.

Working with specialist charity Computer Aid International, we are asking the UK’s technology leaders to donate old PCs so they can have a second life in the developing world.

The appeal web site makes it easy to donate old PCs, and we are hoping to beat last year’s total of more than 28,000.

‘Thanks to Computing readers, Computer Aid has been able to provide PCs to every public library in Eritrea, in partnership with the British Council,’ said Tony Roberts, Computer Aid International chief executive.

‘We have also provided 2,000 PCs to schools in rural Chile, in partnership with Oxfam.’

Computer Aid has been asked to provide 2,000 Pentium3 PCs to furnish every hospital, health centre and Ministry of Health training centre in Rwanda.

The charity also needs 1,000 Pentium3 PCs per year for a project to provide distance learning to train 27,000 nurses in Kenya.

‘Without the support of Computing readers, this will simply not be possible,’ said Roberts.

Computer Aid International provides a free reconditioning service to help companies dispose of unwanted kit effectively.
