Trend updates mobile security solution

Trend Micro has boosted firewall and intrustion detection in its mobile tools

Antivirus and content security specialist Trend Micro has released the latest version of its mobile security product designed to stop malware and protect enterprise users from data leakage.

Mobile Security 3.0 adds firewall and intrusion-detection capabilities to the antivirus protection featured in previous versions, as well as enhanced protection against SMS spam.

Recent IDC research predicted that mobile device shipments will reach nearly 100 million this year, increasing the likelihood of such devices being targeted, according to Trend's Todd Thiemann.

"There is a rapidly increasing number of mobile devices out there, which makes them an attractive target for malware writers and it's a lot easier to download and propagate things on mobile networks now," he argued. "Today the threats are more proof-of-concept but we're seeing enterprises recognise the potential danger that could be caused by them."

At particular risk from potential attack are enterprise applications such as Siebel CRM or push email, which are increasingly being pushed out to mobile devices, he added.

The new version of Mobile Security also features a simpler user interface to boost usability, and its firewall and intrusion-detection capabilities will offer firms the choice between low, medium or high security levels, as well as the ability to block specific IP addresses and ports, said Thiemann.

The product is available immediately for Windows Mobile 5 in both PocketPC and Smartphone versions, and support for Symbian S60 3rd edition is expected next year. Pricing begins at $34.95 per device.
