Global IT operations management software (ITOM) sales increased 13 per cent in 2005.
According to research from analyst Gartner ITOM total software revenue for 2005 was up 12.6 per cent from 2004 to $9.9bn.
‘A consistent level of consolidation continues to transform the IT operations management market,’ said Ruggero Contu, Gartner senior analyst.
‘Large vendors acquired smaller firms and established vendors were acquired by market leaders’ remarking that ‘many new vendors entered the market with ‘best of breed’ point products.’
In 2005 the top five vendors accounted for 60 per cent of the total worldwide ITOM market with US vendors generating over 95 per cent of global sales.
Figures were measured in total software revenue instead of new licence revenue. The change was prompted by the emergence of open-source software and buyer consumption models such as hosted and subscription offerings.
Total software revenue figures include new licenses, updates, subscriptions and hosting, technical support and maintenance.

The largest market segment in 2005 was availability and performance with 24.9 per cent market share.
