Business network capacity set to explode
One in 10 businesses prepare to double their network bandwidth by 2010, while half plan 20 to 50 per cent increase, says survey
Business network capacity set to increase dramtically in 2010 survey says
Ten per cent of top UK financial services organisations, retail firms, and local authorities are planning to more than double their network capacity in 2010, according to an eMedia survey.
In addition, more than half (54 per cent) of the 104 professionals asked said they are planning bandwidth rollouts to increase their capacity between 20 to 50 per cent.
Business network provider Geo, who commissioned the survey, said this is partly the result of an improvement in the economy. The company's enterprise director Mark Ryder added: "It seems that large organisations are beginning to worry that sharing the finite resources of the public internet will have a negative impact on their own operations."
Ryder continued: "We were surprised at the scale of demand for incremental capacity in 2010. Firms want to reduce latency in their networks, which will allow them to move to a better quality of service."
Ryder said that some of the big financial firms who were trying to shave microseconds of their transaction completion times to help bag the deal over their competitors.
Another reason for this apparent increase in demand for more network bandwidth, is that 13 per cent of the firms questioned are planning more use of 'cloud computing' services and virtualisation.
