Dell steps up green plans
Supplier to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2015
Dell is competing for the green market
Dell has stepped up its efforts to position itself as a green hardware vendor by announcing it will source 26 per cent of its global electricity needs from renewable energy sources, up from 20 per cent in 2008.
The increase is the result of new renewable energy partnerships with utility providers in the UK, Germany, Sweden and Norway.
The supplier has a plan to reduce its facilities’ greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2015.
Dell also said it helps suppliers achieve their environmental goals. In June 2007, the company announced that it would require primary suppliers to report CO2 emissions data during quarterly business reviews.
Dell, IBM and HP have long been engaged in a fierce battle to present themselves as the greenest hardware vendor.
Dane Parker, director of environment, health and safety at Dell, said the firm was integrating green power into operations wherever possible.
"It’s critical that our industry helps lead the way to a green economy. Aggressive energy efficiency and renewable-power targets are essential to making this happen,” he said.
Kate Krebs, The Climate Group’s director of sustainable resources, welcomed the vendor's efforts.
“The Climate Group applauds Dell’s commitment to drive demand for clean energy, improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint," she said.
"The Climate Group’s Smart 2020 report illustrated how the IT sector has the potential to reduce global emissions by 15 per cent and save the global industry $800bn in annual energy costs by 2020."
Dell came fifth from bottom in Greenpeace's most recent guide to greener electronics, losing points for reneging on promises to eliminate toxins in all its products by the end of 2009 and a lack of clarity over the energy efficiency of its products.
