Utilities investigate technology for better meter management
E.ON, the organisation that runs Powergen, is to test computer-based smart metering technology with some of its large business customers.
The utility is examining the use of smart metering software to remotely configure meters, collect billing data and related readings, and interface with its other IT systems.
The trial coincides with a consultation process launched by gas and electricity regulator Ofgem yesterday (Wednesday) into the application and benefits of deploying smart metering systems.
An E.ON spokeswoman told Computing that the organisation will investigate the technology’s potential to manage utility consumption by allowing new facilities such as automated billing and itemised use.
‘Like most energy suppliers, we are looking closely at developments in smart metering. There is significant interest from customers in smart metering, and we are investigating how this can be used most effectively to create value for our customers and the impact it could have on energy consumption,’ she said.
‘E.ON has submitted a tender for software that will be used in the trial with some of our larger business customers, from which we expect to learn more about its benefits.’
The Ofgem consultation is intended to contribute to a report to be released in May into the potential for smart metering technology to replace conventional meters, which generally calculate consumption as units that are used per hour.
‘The consultation is designed to seek partnerships to develop ideas on the cost and benefits of smart metering,’ said an Ofgem spokesman.
‘We will be seeking communication with users, the industry and consumer groups so that we can also discuss the potential impact on energy consumption and carbon emissions.’
Ofgem also says smart metering may provide clearer LCD displays to show amounts billed by the hour, automated central billing to remove the need for estimated bills, or meters that are able to split consumption by individual appliance.
