Mobile market on the move

Music and television drive continued mobile growth

The mobile phone market is expected to grow more than six per cent a year in Western Europe, driven primarily by music and television, according to a new report.

‘We are now seeing a rapid acceleration in the number of full-track downloads and in streamed TV usage,’ says Analysys report author Dr Windsor Holden. ‘Subscribers are becoming more familiar and comfortable accessing both on and off-portal content.

‘As mobile broadband becomes more prevalent this growth is likely to continue.’

Holden says the market could be worth €198.4bn (£137bn) by 2011 while the long term prospects for voice revenue are also encouraging.

This new report analyses current trends in the Western European mobile market, including strategies for fixed-mobile convergence, mobile broadcast television technologies and high-speed downlink packet access deployment.

The report concludes that fixed-mobile convergence has emerged as a key strategic challenge for mobile operators.

‘Moves towards converged technologies will result in greater competition within the mobile market,’ said Holden.
