GPS speeds up courier's service
Ecommerce firm automates processes using wireless access
Online delivery service firm eCourier is to deploy a bespoke navigation system after upgrading its mobile handheld devices.
The courier’s business model is based on automated booking, allocation, routing and tracking of the delivery process. It uses PDAs and global positioning system (GPS) technology to transmit job data to drivers, to improve services and control costs.
‘With these new devices, we get better GPS compatibility and greater operating stability,’ said chief technology officer Jay Bregman. ‘The greater processor speed means common tasks get done faster, and with the Windows Mobile software it runs, we can be a bit more aggressive about the applications that run on the device.’
eCourier has deployed the Xda IIi PDA device with GPRS connectivity from mobile provider O2, allowing delivery staff to access purpose-written navigation software, and for more frequent updates than off-the-shelf offerings at a lower cost.
