Mobile workers put strain on IT department

Technology moves too fast for support staff to keep up

The growth in mobile workers is adversely impacting on IT staff who are overworked, according to new research.

The rapid expansion of mobile workers is beyond the rate at which IT staff can support it, with 69 per cent calling for better communication from IT staff, and over half complaining they are being let down by their IT team while working away from the office, according to the Citrix study.

Despite the accepted work/life balance benefits of mobile working as technologies and networks improve, Richard Jackson, UK and Ireland managing director at Citrix, says security risks are a concern.

‘Mobile working is an important part of the on-demand world, but a solid security system is central to its success. Workers and businesses need to feel confident that they are completely secure when working away from the office, with an IT support team always available,’ he said.

Jackson says companies should focus on giving employees necessary technical back up.

'Employers need to invest at the grass roots, making sure their IT team have the resources to provide the back up that mobile workers need,’ he said.
