Last week the former director of the CIA, James Woolsey, reportedly made an announcement about the Echelon network, saying that the US targets European e-businesses "with espionage, with communications and with reconnaissance satellites". He alledgedly said that economic spying was justified because European companies were the "principle offenders from the point of view of paying bribes in major international contracts". He added: "There are some areas of technology where US industry is behind companies in other countries."
